Darron (Dr Darron SUN, Charter President of Tech Talk Toastmasters), Prof WONG (Prof. Hon WONG Kam-fai, Legislative Council Member), Duncan (Hon Duncan CHIU, Legislative Council Member), esteemed members of Tech Talk Toastmaster, ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening. It is my great pleasure to join you tonight at this momentous occasion – the launch of Tech Talk Toastmasters in Hong Kong. I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the establishment of this unique and forward-looking platform. Your commitment to fostering communication and elevating public speaking skills, particularly among professionals in the technology sector, is both admirable and timely. I am truly honoured to witness the beginning of what I am confident will be a remarkable journey.
The importance of communication skills in the technology sector cannot be overstated. In this rapidly evolving digital era, technical expertise is undoubtedly vital. However, the ability to articulate complex ideas, collaborate effectively, and inspire innovation is what truly sets individuals apart. Toastmasters, with its decades-long tradition of empowering confident public speakers, offers an invaluable platform for IT professionals to bridge the gap between technical knowledge and impactful communication. Tech Talk Toastmasters, with its focus on technology and innovation, reflects the growing recognition of this critical need in our ever-changing world. For Hong Kong to remain at the forefront of global innovation, it is essential that we equip our talent not only with the latest technical skills but also with the ability to share ideas and build connections effectually. This is where Tech Talk Toastmasters can make a meaningful difference.
While sharing ideas is a key to turning innovation into action, preparing individuals for success also requires a focus on technical skills and practical experience. As outlined in the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint, the HKSAR Government is committed to expanding the IT talent pool to drive long-term innovation. To this end, we have implemented several initiatives to inspire and nurture talents. For example, my Office has been collaborating with local IT industry to organise the Hong Kong ICT Awards since 2006, recognising outstanding achievements. We also lead the Hong Kong delegation to take part in international events such as the “Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards” (APICTA), providing opportunities for local tech start-ups, SMEs, NGOs and students to showcase their innovative ideas and technology solutions on the global stage. In addition, we will continue to set up our Smart Hong Kong Pavilion at the coming InnoEX 2025 featuring over 100 innovative technology solutions that benefit citizens’ daily lives, including those developed by government departments and winning entries from the local ICT industry and students. Through these programmes, we aim to cultivate creativity, innovation, and cross-industry collaboration, contributing to Hong Kong’s development as a global I&T hub.
As highlighted in this year’s Budget, the Government has taken significant steps to advance artificial intelligence and foster international collaboration. We have set aside $1 billion for the establishment of the Hong Kong AI R&D Institute to support Hong Kong AI innovation and industrial application. Furthermore, two significant international AI events are going to take place in Hong Kong. The first is the International Conference on Embodied AI Robots, which brings together leading technology companies, academic institutions, and investors to showcase cutting-edge research developments and practical applications. The second is the International Young Scientist Forum on AI that aims to promote AI’s research and its development as an industry and allow young talents from around the world to exchange ideas and forge collaborative opportunities. Both events not only showcase the Government’s commitment to driving AI innovation but also present excellent opportunities for Tech Talk Toastmasters members to put their skills into practice, whether by speaking eloquently to share ideas or networking with experts from diverse backgrounds. These occasions are perfect opportunities to practice, shine and demonstrate the communication skills honed here. And more importantly, to join in telling the exciting I&T development story of Hong Kong to the world, and attracting more businesses, investments, tech projects and talents to Hong Kong.
In closing, I would like to once again congratulate Tech Talk Toastmasters on this important milestone. Your dedication to education and empowerment will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on professionals in the technology sector, enriching not only their careers but also the broader community.
Finally, I would like to invite you all to visit our Smart Hong Kong Pavilion at the InnoEX 2025 to be held during 13 to 16 April. You will be guaranteed lots of interactive demonstration of various I&T solutions as well as networking occasions. I look forward to welcoming you there.
Thank you, and I wish Tech Talk Toastmasters every success in the years to come.
