Admission Requirements

Applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) results must meet:

1. the General Entrance Requirements; and
2. the School-specific Requirements.

General Entrance Requirements: 1․ Four core subjects:(a) Chinese Language at Level 3 or above․(b) English Language at Level 3 or above․(c) Mathematics (Compulsory Module) at Level 3 or above(d) Liberal Studies at Level 2 or above․ 2․ Two electives:(a) Elective 1 at Level 3 or above․(b) Elective 2, or Mathematics Extended Modules (M1 or M2) at Level 3 or above․School-specific Requirements:Electives should be one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT, or Combined Science․

Admission Requirements

Note:

  1. Special consideration for admission may also be given to applicants who had excellent achievements in STEM subjects.
    If applicants apply to School of Engineering, put HKUST programme(s) in Band A JUPAS choice and fulfil the followings:
    1. No more than one level examination grade in one subject marginally less than the University minimum entrance requirement, i.e. 332233; and
    2. At least 3 stars or above among the STEM subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (Compulsory Part), Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2, Information & Communication Technology, Designed & Applied Technology, Integrated Science, Combined Science) with combinations listed below:
      1. At least One 5** and One 5* subjects; or
      2. At least Three 5* subjects

Programme Structure

Under the four-year School-based program, students who are interested in studying IT-related programs will first be admitted to the School of Engineering or the School of Science rather than to individual programs. They will have at least one year to explore various programs before deciding on their major departments. The broad-based, student-centered engineering curriculum allows flexibility for students to take other minors, an extended major, additional major(s) or dual degree programs involving both engineering and non-engineering areas enabling students to pursue other areas of interests. In the first year of study, students will acquire foundation knowledge in science and quantitative methods in preparation for the engineering education as well as a broad-based common core education, which aims to enrich students’ overall undergraduate experience, complementing studies in specialist disciplines and other learning opportunities. Upon completion of the first year, students will select a department within the schools, such as the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. In the second year and third year, they will study Major Foundation and Core Courses based on their selected programs which are all government-funded, i.e. BEng in Computer Engineering, BEng in Computer Science, BEng in Electronic Engineering, BSc in Computer Science, or BSc in Data Science and Technology. The BSc in Data Science and Technology is jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering and the Department of Mathematics in the School of Science. In the fourth year, they will be engaged in in-depth study in the specialised areas and undertake the Capstone Final Year Project. A new Extended Major framework (Major +X) has been introduced in 2021. The Extended Major is not a standalone major and it allows students to acquire the solid knowledge from their own major as well as the innovative application of “X”. The School of Engineering has launched the Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (AI) program in Fall 2021. Students in different degree programs may consider taking the Extended Major in AI to broaden their knowledge in technology applications. In 2022-23, another Extended major in Digital Media and Creative Arts (DMCA) becomes available. Beside the Extended major, there are other enrichment programs which students may select at their interest such as Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, Internship, Exchange and various competitions.
